Daylight

A poem by Heartland Creative Writing student, Hailey Henrichs
When the daylight comes it’ll bring me back to you
Just like it always has
Because you say you will keep me safe
Safe from physical harm sure
But mental harm is a different chapter in a different story
We go into combat armed
Armed with hateful insults and hurtful words
Armed with threats and cruel outcomes
The battle lasts an eternity
But really on lasts a few minutes
You always come out victorious, even if it seems I have won
You pull out a secret weapon and use it like a stake
You drive it through my heart and wait to see me bleed
Once you do, you walk away, victorious
But at what cost?
Hours later you come back to the prey
Ready to heal it, but the prey is in another life now
You forget a crucial thing
If you cut me…I will bleed
If unattended I bleed out
And the moon rises
Tomorrow is a new day
But it did not bring me back to you
For the prey has been attacked to many times
Defeated you walk away
As you do the prey rises
Reborn
Not for you…but for itself
But when the daylight comes it’ll bring me back to you
Just like it always has
